Son of legendary Australian rider Mick Doohan takes his first victory in Formula 3

Australian motor racing driver Jack Doohan, son of legendary MotoGP world champion Mick, won his first race in Formula 3.

In the rain at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France, the Australian was the best in the wet winning the weekend feature race over 20 laps.

“We nailed that, we nailed it,” he said over team radio after Sunday’s win.

“Thank you guys so much.”

Doohan started the race in fourth and manoeuvred his way to the front of the grid, holding off championship leader Dennis Hauger in the final laps to win.

A huge downpour at the start of the race made it tough for drivers.

The Australian could be seen wrestling the car through the slippery conditions all the way to the chequered flag.

Doohan comes from a strong racing pedigree; his father Mick won the MotoGP world title five consecutive times from 1994 to 1998.

“I am very happy with the result and very thankful to the team, to the engineers and the mechanics for giving me an awesome car,” Doohan said of his winning race.

“The conditions weren’t the easiest, but we managed them well and came out on top.

“I am very happy.”

The result moves Doohan into third in the Formula 3 drivers’ championship.

He trails the championship leader Hauger by eight points.

The next race weekend for Formula Three will be in Austria in a fortnight.
