Kasper Schmeichel’s ‘cheeky’ dig at England

Obviously, lots has been said about the prospect of England bringing football home should they win the Euro 2020 tournament, in reference to the popular Three Lions song (yes, it is popular).

Schmeichel was asked about this, i.e. the prospect of denying England the chance to bring it home in his press conference. His response?

“Has it ever been home?”

Ouch. Although it’s a fair call, particularly when it comes to the Euros, although that’s not quite what is meant by the phrase.

“I don’t know. Have you ever won it? ’66? Was that not the World Cup?

“To be honest I haven’t given any thought to what it would mean to stop England. It’s more what it would do for Denmark. I’ve focused very little on the England team.

“It’s what it would do for our country back home. The joy it would bring to five million back home to do something like that, to compete with the nations we are competing with. Not really a lot of feelings for England on this.”

So there you go.

Interesting stat though. 29 years ago, Kasper’s dad Peter won the Euros with Denmark. If Denmark upsets the apple cart today, and in the final, will this be a first ever father-son triumph?
