Victorians underway at Tokyo Olympics as proud families watch on

Maureen and Wayne Harris were nervous as they sat in front of their TV to watch their granddaughter — 19-year-old Wodonga-born Meg Harris — take part in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.

Ms Harris said while the team’s performance during the heat gave them confidence going into the final, they were still apprehensive as they waited for the race to start.

It didn’t take long until they were on their feet.

She said they spoke to Meg last night and she was overjoyed at claiming her first gold medal in her first Olympics.

“Absolutely brilliant. You can’t get the smile out of her voice,” Ms Harris said.

“She just said it was unreal and she said it was just one of those dreams that you never think are going to happen, but it did.”

Ms Harris says they are looking forward to seeing Meg when she comes home.

‘You can’t miss him’

Colin and Geraldine Repacholi from Mooroopna watched on their computer as their son Daniel competed in his fifth Olympic Games.

Mr Repacholi said Daniel shot reasonably well when he competed in the men’s 10m air pistol event on Saturday and he finished 30th in the rankings.

He says shooting at Olympic level is tough.

“At that level of shooting you’ve got to shoot 10 after 10 after 10,” Mr Repacholi said.

The 39-year-old pistol shooter made his debut in the Olympics in Athens 2004 and hasn’t missed one yet.

While Daniel is yet to taste Olympic success yet, he has won gold and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Mr Repacholi says his towering son is over two metres tall and has a big red beard so always stands out from the crowd in the Olympic Village.

He said it was an amazing achievement for him to compete in five Olympic games.

Daniel will have another medal chance on Tuesday when he competes in the mixed 10m air pistol teams event.
