The Matildas’ hopes of an Olympic medal have been ended by the US superstars
The Matildas’ hopes of winning Australia’s first Olympic medal in women’s football have been dashed by the United States.
USWNT legends Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd were at their best in front of goal, pouncing on Australia’s defensive woes to score a pair of goals each.
The Matildas were brave in defeat, fighting back from 4-1 down in the 51st minute to have a chance of sending the game into extra time in the dying stages.
But the lead the USWNT had built up was too much for the Matildas to overcome, ending what they hoped would be the biggest win of their careers.
More to come.
