Alex Glenn calls time on 13-year NRL career, leaving Broncos searching for a new captain

Alex Glenn has called time on his 13-year NRL career, the Brisbane captain admitting the ability to retire a one-club player was “beyond anything I could have imagined”.

The 282-game back-rower made the announcement on Thursday in the lead-up to Sunday’s clash with the Warriors.
Glenn debuted as a 20-year-old in 2009 and, now 33, will hang up the boots at the end of this season as the fourth most-capped Broncos player in history.
He won the Broncos’ Kevin Walters Award for most consistent player a record five times.
Glenn was handed the captaincy by former coach Anthony Seibold last year. However, a string of injuries meant he managed just eight games in 2020 as the Broncos collected their first wooden spoon.
They sit second last with just five wins from 21 games this season but have shown signs of life in recent weeks.
“It was always a dream come true to play for the Broncos, but to finish my career as a one-club player here is beyond anything I could have imagined,” he said.
“The Broncos have a bright future ahead, you can see that by the way we have turned things around this year, and I can’t wait to see this team grow and succeed in the years ahead.”
Father of three Glenn is expected to continue working with the club in an off-field role, his on-field efforts matched by his unblemished record off it.
“Lex has played at a very high standard for a long time and led by example on and off the field,” coach Walters said.
“To be so consistent week-in, week-out since making his debut in 2009 is an incredible effort.”
Glenn also played 12 Tests for New Zealand and two for the Cook Islands.
His retirement will leave Walters on the hunt for a new captain to begin his second year at the helm.
Patrick Carrigan, sidelined with a long-term knee injury, deputised for Glenn over the past two seasons, Payne Haas has emerged as a pack general while premiership-winning half-back Adam Reynolds will arrive from South Sydney as a ready-made leader next season.
