Live: Tim Tszyu meets Steve Spark in Newcastle

Can Spark cause a huge upset?

Main Event

Steve Spark is one of the up and coming fighters in Australian boxing and, with a knockout percentage of 85 per cent, is not someone who can be taken lightly.

Although he’s always fought at a lighter weight, he weighed in for this super welterweight fight at 69.66kg, just a feather under the limit of 70kg, so he seems carry the weight OK.

Can he bring that same knockout power though? We’ll wait and see. Taking a fight on short notice, even if we was/still is booked for a show in Toowoomba on July 24, so was in training, is a tough ask and Tszyu is way above anyone else he has fought before in terms of class.

The danger for Tszyu though, as ever, is the unknown.

Spark has come in to this fight on a week’s notice, meaning Tszyu has not had any time to prepare specifically for him, which could be incredibly dangerous in a world where any matchmaking takes place at almost forensic detail.

There are surely better and more recent examples of this, but the case that springs to mind is Andy Ruiz Jr taking on Anthony Joshua in their first fight. There was slightly more notice in that case (about a month and a half), but Joshua was caught napping badly and ended up losing his belts in that case, delaying his chances of unifying the belts against Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder.

Will this happen to Tszyu? There’s always a risk, and Tszyu has a hell of a lot to loose. This fight is going out to US and UK audiences, meaning everyone will have a chance to see whether he is worth matching their fighters against.

Perform badly or even lose against a bloke who was pulling pints a week ago, and that sets Tszyu’s pathway back a long way.
