The Golden Eagle
A little under 870 kms up the road from Flemington, we have another big race to keep an eye on today.
The Golden Eagle (with total prize money of $7.5 million, including $4.1 million to the winner) is Australia’s third-richest race, after the Everest and the Melbourne Cup.
The race is a 1500m event for four-year-old horses, and the start is scheduled for 4:50pm AEDT / 3:50pm AEST.

What’s on the agenda?
There are plenty who deem Derby Day at Flemington the best individual race meeting of the year, and it’s not hard to see why.
- Four Group One races – The Empire Rose Stakes (3:00pm AEDT / 2:00pm AEST), the Victoria Derby (3:45pm AEDT / 2:45pm AEST), the Coolmore Stud Stakes (4:30pm AEDT / 3:30pm AEST) and the Kennedy Cantala (5:10pm AEDT / 4:10pm AEST)
- The Group Three Hotham Handicap,(1:00pm AEDT / midday AEST), which is the last chance for Melbourne Cup hopefuls to earn a spot in Tuesday’s field
- The Group Two Wakeful Stakes (1:40pm AEDT / 12:40pm AEST), for three-year-old fillies, which is the key marker for next Thursday’s VRC Oaks
If that wasn’t enough, we have a fair few extra storylines on and off the course as well.
Can Forget You win the Victoria Derby and go on to be the first Australian three-year-old in the Melbourne Cup since Arena in 1998?
Will Spanish Mission pass his final vet’s inspection to take his place in the Melbourne Cup after a suspected infection?
Will Knights Order run well enough in the Hotham for trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott and connections to keep the horse in the Cup field?
Oh yes … and there are crowds back on course at the Melbourne Cup Carnival!
