Eels player faces NRL fine for sex tape

The Parramatta player illegally filmed having consensual sex in a public toilet has been fined $5,000 by the NRL.

However, the league also offered to assist the player if he wished to pursue legal action against the person who recorded the video.

The Eels argued the player had his privacy invaded by being filmed in a sex act without his consent, with the footage claimed to have been taken over the cubicle door by a third party.

The Eels last week informed the NRL’s integrity unit of the incident, saying attempts had been made to distribute the video of the player, who has not been named, to media outlets and on social media.

The NRL on Wednesday acknowledged the player was the alleged victim, but it said all players had a responsibility to ensure their actions did not risk damaging the brand and reputation of the game.

“In this circumstance, the NRL believes the player failed in that responsibility,” a league statement read.

“The NRL accepts the player is the alleged victim of an illegally filmed video and is offering both welfare support and assistance if he wishes to pursue criminal action against the individual who filmed the video.

“The NRL has determined the player did not breach any other NRL rule nor is there any complaint about the conduct of the player.”

The player has five days to respond to the NRL’s breach notice.
