Authorities said that a French police officer was stabbed to death at her police station on Friday near the historic Rambouillet chateau outside Paris, and colleague officers shot and killed the suspected assailant at the scene.
A national police spokesman said the identity and motive of the attacker were not immediately clear. The police officer was a 48-year-old administrative employee, the spokesman said.
According to police sources, the attack took place at around 2.20 pm (1220 GMT) in the secure entrance area of the station.
A source said that the 48-year-old woman was stabbed twice in the neck.
Prime Minister Jean Castex and Interior Minister Gerald Dermanin both announced they are going to the scene.
The attacker was 36 years old and was unknown to security services, sources close to the investigation told AFP.
Investigators were looking into whether there was any link to terrorism, but the anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office said it was not currently involved in the investigation.
Karl Olive, vice president of the regional council, said on BFM television that “We are amazed.”
The attack took place inside a police station in a quiet residential area of the town of Rambouillet southwest of Paris, which is sometimes used for international peace talks. Police cordoned off the area after the stabbing.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex, Interior Minister Gerald Dermanin and other top officials have visited the site of the attack to show support for police.
France has seen deadly attacks on police in the past, some of them by Islamist extremists.
Several attacks in the past year have rekindled concerns about immigration within France, as well as the spread of radical Islam.
In September, a Pakistani man injured two people by leaving meat outside the former office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which printed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
On October 16, Samuel Patty, a young Chechen refugee teacher, beheaded Samuel Patty, who showed some caricatures to his students.
And on October 29, a Tunisian man who had just arrived at a church in the Mediterranean city of Nice had stabbed three people to death.
