Kyle Chalmers falls agonisingly short in Olympic 100m quest

Australian swimmer Kyle Chalmers has won silver in the Olympic 100 metres freestyle, falling short in his quest for back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the event.

Chalmers took second place in a time of 47.08 seconds, finishing just 0.06s behind American winner Caeleb Dressel.

The ROC’s Kliment Kolesnikov finished in third with a time of 47:44.

“I gave everything I could,” Chalmers said after the race.

“But to win gold in 2016 and come back and win silver, it’s great.

“I left absolutely everything in the pool, and did everything I could to do it for my country.”

It was Australia’s second medal of the day, after Izaac Stubblety-Cook took gold in the men’s 200m breaststroke.

The silver lifts Australia’s medal tally at the Tokyo Olympics to 18.

Australia has another chance to add to its medal tally in the pool today with the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay team, spearheaded by Ariarne Titmus, swimming for gold at 1:31pm AEST.
