Queensland names 20-man State of Origin squad

Queensland has named a 20-man squad for the first State of Origin game against New South Wales on June 9.

There are question marks over the team for game one, however, with the trio of Cameron Munster, Kalyn Ponga and Harry Grant all included in the squad — listed in alphabetical order — despite not having played in three weeks due to injuries.

Asked whether Munster would play, Maroons coach Paul Green said: “We’ll wait and see — at this stage, given it’s day one of camp, we haven’t done anything on the paddock yet — but by all reports he’s ticked all the boxes he’s up to … we’re reasonably confident [he’ll play].”

Green, who has taken over from Kevin Walters as Queensland coach, said preparation was important and hinted that a decision on Munster and others would have to be made with days to spare before the game.

Utility back AJ Brimson is listed despite failing to finish Sunday’s game for the Titans against Cronulla with bone bruising to his knee.

Parramatta hooker Reed Mahoney is set to make his debut, while Wests Tigers prop Joe Ofahengaue returns to the squad after making his Origin debut in 2019.

The squad will come together in Brisbane today in preparations for the series opener next Wednesday night.

SQUAD: Jai Arrow, AJ Brimson, Kurt Capewell, Daly Cherry-Evans, Xavier Coates, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Kyle Feldt, David Fifita, Moeaki Foutiaka, Dane Gagai, Harry Grant, Coen Hess, Valentine Holmes, Felise Kaufusi, Reed Mahoney, Cameron Munster, Joe Ofahengaue, Kalyn Ponga, Jaydn Su’A, Christian Welch.

More to come.
