Keegan Palmer wins gold for Australia in men’s park skateboarding at Tokyo

Australian skateboarder Keegan Palmer has won gold in the men’s park skateboarding at the Tokyo Olympics.

The gold medal is Australia’s 17th in Tokyo — equal to the nation’s total at the 2004 Athens Games and the most the country has ever won at an Olympics.

Palmer became the first man to win the event after he executed a run of 94.04 in his opening effort at the final.

No other competitors, except for Palmer himself with a run of 95.83, would go on to top that mark, delivering gold for the 18-year-old ahead of Pedro Barros of Brazil and Cory Juneau of the USA.

  • Gold — Keegan Palmer (AUS) 95.83
  • Silver — Pedro Barros (BRA) 86.14
  • Bronze — Cory Juneau (USA) 84.13

Palmer and 17-year-old Australian Kieran Woolley, who finished fifth, were the two youngest competitors in the men’s park final.

Palmer’s gold came a day after the gripping final in the women’s park event, which saw Japan’s Sakura Yosozumi and Kokona Hiraki win gold and silver and Britain’s Sky Brown take bronze.

Skateboarding has made its Olympic debut in Tokyo, with men and women competing in both park and street disciplines.
